HIGHLAND DANCING
RECORD ENTRIES AT COMPETITIONS
There were record entries of more than 600 at the thirteenth annual competitions of the North Canterbury centre of the New Zealand Piping and Dancing Association, which began in the St. Saviour’s Church schoolroom, Sydenham, last evening. The competitions, which will include the New Zealand, South Island, and Canterbury championships, attracted more than 170 entrants, who came from all districts in Canterbury, as well as from Oamaru, Dunedin, Blenheim, Nelson, and Wellington. The competitions will continue today at the Methodist schoolroom, Sydenham, when the championship event will be held. The judges were Mr D. Guild (Wellington) and Miss B. Thompson (Christchurch). The pipers were Messrs J. Paton, N. Burney, A. Miller, and G. Burrows. Results: — Highland Fling, under eight.—Laonie Brooms 1, Gaye Ferguson 2, Glenda Melhuish 3, Barbara Peter 4. Irish Jig, eight and under 10.—Bryan Plimmer 1, Mary Wise and Pamela Kinzett (equal) 2, Helen Flockton 4. Highland Fling, Novice, 12 and over.— Maxine Pelvin 1, Lenore Stokes 2, Carolyn Melhuish 3. Sailor’s Hornpipe, 10 and under 12. Suzanne Dobbs 1, Marlene Templeton 2, Carol Randall 3, Barbara Pascoe and Valerie Morris (equal) 4. Seann Triubhais, 12 and under 14. Patricia Arnst 1, Eleanor Kirkwood 2. lan Standeven and Brian North (equal) 3. Seann Triubhais, 14 and under 16. —Joan Wildermoth 1, Mary O’Brien 2, Janice Newell 3.
