OBITUARY

MR WILLIAM STREW (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, October 20.

Mr William Strew, a member of the armed constabulary which took part in the campaign against Te Kooti in the seventies, has died in Auckland, aged 100. Born and educated in London, Mr Strew came to New Zealand in 1874 in the sailing ship Golden Sea after a voyage of 100 days. He joined the armed constabulary and was sent to Taupo, where the. Maoris under Te Kooti were restless.

Later he became a storekeeper at Taupo, and from there saw the Tarawera eruption light up the sky. It was 3 o’clock in the morning, so he went back to bed.

Mr Strew later had a drapery business in Rotorua for 14 years. He retired and came to Auckland about 40 years ago. His wife died 18 years ago, and he is survived by his twin daughters, Misses Myrtle and Mildred Strew, with whom he had been living at Howick.
