Lost Manhole Covers
Residents of the borough of Ellerslie, in Auckland, will shortly see their council staff searching through borough streets with a mine detector. The men will be looking not for mines, but for manhole covers. The Town Clerk (Mr B. Jacobsen) reported at a council meeting that several sewer manhole covers had been covered over and lay hidden beneath sealed roads. A mine detector would be of great help to the foreman and his staff in finding them. Manholes appeared on some maps but could hot be found on the street surface. Three were lost in one street recently, and found only with a borrowed City Council detector. “They are of extremely great value,” said Mr Jacobsen. “We often had men digging for two or three days seeking them.”
