H. Lili, the president, in her opening address at the half-yearly council meeting of the Mid-Canterbury Federation of New Zealand Country Women's Institutes, held in the Mayfield Hall. Mrs H. Tasker (group convener) welcomed delegates and presented floral sprays to the officers of the federation. All institutes gave full Support to “Operation Snowball,” the scheme from headquarters planned to mark the thirty-fifth anniversary of the founding of Country Women’s Institutes in New Zealand. Mrs J. R. Mounsey, Dominion councillor, gave a report on the Dominion Council meeting held in Napier. Arrangements were made for celebrating the coming-of-age of the MidCanterbury Federation next April. It was decided to present a pageant of countries represented in the United Nations, and as a permanent memorial each institute- will plant trees on a plot of ground. A letter was received from the Ashburton Hospital asking for donations of goods for selling on a stall at the entrance to the hospital on November 25. Competitions resulted:—Floral arrangement suitable for hospital gift: Mrs H. Tasker 1, Mrs J. Stericker 2, Mrs Jackson and Mrs W. Doyle 3 equal. Informal posy bowl: Mrs D. Robertson 1, Mrs W. Doyle 2, Mrs R. Walden 3. Most attractive tea cosy: Mrs R. Limbrick 1, Mrs C. Gunn 2, Mrs G. Whiting 3. Three sugar buns (with fruit): Mrs L. Morgan 1, Mrs R. Carter 2, Miss Dowler 3. Three sugar buns (plain): Mrs J. Ambler 1, Mrs C. Sewell 2.
