LYTTELTON WHARF CARTAGE

GENERAL LICENCE REFUSED

An application by Charles Edward Loader, of Lyttelton, for a vehicle authority to carry general goods on the Lyttelton wharf was rejected by the Number 9 Transport Licensing Authority (Mr J. A. Bretherton) in Christchurch yesterday. Loader’s application to carry livestock on the Lyttelton wharf and to and from the wharf was granted. Mr J. S. Haywood, who appeared for Loader, said that Loader was employed loading and unloading livestock on ships at Lyttelton by the Railways Department and stock, firms, and had to supply feed and sometimes transport animals from the wharf to a paddock. He had been offered a contract to carry the luggage of tourists from ships to waiting tour buses, and had been asked by the shipping companies to carry gear about the wharves. He had been asked to carry stock to and from his property on Sumner road, and out of Lyttelton, but he had no wish to become a general carrier in the borough of Lyttelton. The application was opposed by Lyttelton carriers (Mr H. W. Hunter). Recently, two carriers had lost business and had to look elsewhere, said Mr Hunter. . The Authority said he found it difficult to see that the work of the applicant, regarding livestock, was of any interest to other carriers, although they said they were interested in goods on the wharf. He granted a licence to carry livestock and feed to and from the wharf and the applicants property but not to Christchurch or elsewhere in Lyttelton.

Rental Station Waggons An amendment to the rental car licence of Christchurch Rental Cars. Ltd, was granted, permitting the use of two light station waggons. For the company, Mr Hunter said that the company considered there was a satisfactory demand for station waggons by campers, deer-stalkers and families on holiday, and no such vehicles were available. An amendment to allow the company a light Van, for which it claimed to have to. refer inquiries to other firms, was refused.
