MANSLAUGHTER AT NELSON
LOWER HUTT MAN FOUND GUILTY SCHOOLTEACHER’S DEATH IN HOTEL KITCHEN (New Zealand Press Association) NELSON, October 20. Michael Patrick Ryan, aged 41 years, a Lower Hutt manufacturer and showman, was found guilty of manslaughter in the Supreme Court at Nelson today, and was remanded for sentence at Wellington. Ryan was charged with unlawfully killing Claude Clere Neville Kitchingman, aged 34 years, a schoolteachei, of Pakawau, on the morning of April 24 in the kitchen of the Panama Hotel, Nelson, thus committing manslaughter. The jury retired at 11.30 a.m., and returned at 3.30 p.m. with its verdict. Mr Justice Turner presided. When the case was previously before the Supreme Court in July, the jury disagreed and a retrial was ordered. The evidence at the retrial followed the lines of that given in the previous trial.
