SMITH RETAINS WORLD TITLE

LIGHT WEIGHT BOUT IN CINCINNATI

(Rec. 10 p.m.) CINCINNATI, Oct. 19. Wallace Smith retained his world light-weight boxing championship tonight by defeating Jimmy Carter in a 15-round bout. Smith gained a unanimous decision. It was first announced that Smith had won on a split decision of the three judges, but later it was stated that a recheck of the tabulations of one judge showed he also favoured Smith, making the decision unanimous.

Under Ohio rules, the referee has no vote. There was a long delay between the end of the match and the first announcement of the decision. There were no knockdowns, but Carter almost knocked Smith out at the end of the thirteenth round. Each weighed 9st 91b. Carter, who entered the ring an 8 to 5 on favourite, was trying to regain his title for the fourth time. Smith won the title from Carter on a split decision on June 29 in Boston.
