Rise In Newsprint Price Opposed
(Rec. 10 p.m.) NEW YORK, Oct. 19. Mr Cranston Williams, general manager of the American Newspaper Publishers’ Association, said today that the five dollars a ton increase in newsprint price announced yesterday by the St. Lawrence Paper Corporation of Canada was “neither wise nor justified.”
He said the association was surprised at the increase because several .Canadian producers had indicated that they were not considering any increase in price at present. “If it should turn out that St. Lawrence is taking the leadership after Sir Eric Bowater’s trial balloon, with other producers following immediately oi shortly thereafter, it would mean an additional expense to the United States publishers of more than 32,000,000 dollars eventually,” Mr Williams said.
He referred to a prediction made recently by Sir Eric Bowater, head of one of the world’s largest paper producers, that more increases in price would be necessary.
