ADDINGTON MARKET

EWES AND LAMBS IMPROVE Plainer Fat Wethers Cheaper FURTHER EASING FOR CATTLE A better demand set in for ewes and lambs in the store sheep section at Addington market yesterday. Values improved by 2s to 3s and woolly ewes with lambs sold at up to 58s 6d. Store ewe and wether hoggets showed no marked change in value.

Fat wethers, with the exception of the best, were 31s or 4s easier, but ewes again enjoyed a free sale with values from par to a shade better. Good spring lambs met a sound sale, but others were easier by 2s. There was a big" entry in the hogget pens and while choice quality still made high rates plain and unfinished sheep were cheaper. In the fat cattle section steers and heifers were easier but cows continued to sell at about late rates. STORE SHEEP A firming sale for ewes and lambs was a feature of the store sheep offering which was again a large one with 6818 head in the yards, compared with 7373 a week ago. In the selction were 2058 ewe hoggets, 1663 wether hoggets, 56 mixed sex hoggets, 1342 wethers, 788 ewes with 840 lambs running with them, and 71 other ewes. Apart from the best, which were slightly firmer, ewe hoggets out of the wool showed little change from the last sale, but they continued to sell at a discount in comparison with wether hoggets, which met a steady market at late rates. The best of the shorn ewe hoggets realised from 64s to 745, with average to good at 52s to 58s, medium 40s to 48s, and others back to 295. Two excellent pens of woolled Corriedales from G. D. GiHanders (Darfield) fetched 95s and £5, which was roughly in line With what ne was paid for similar-sheep last week. Top £rice in the shorn section was 74s for a ne of 97 Romneys from Marlborough and several other pens of Romneys sold between that price and 60s. In the wether hogget section, best shorn sheep sold from 59s 6d to 635, good at 50s to 58s, medium at 42s to 48s, ana others down to 30s.

The ewe and lamb sale developed a better tone, and it ended on a good note with the last few pens making to 58s 6d. Values appeared to advance by about 2s to 3s, with even the medium quality pen? easier to sell. The tops of the selection, which was smaller than last week, made from 53s 6d to 58s 6d, with medium to good at 40s to 495, and others at 30s to 395. Shorn ewes and lambs sold to about 325.

The market was topped by John Legg (Lakeside), whose 54 woolly Corriedale ewes and 56 Southdown lambs made 58s 6d. Fifty-four four, six, and eight-toota Corriedale ewes and 56 Southdown cross lambs from J. R. McLean (Southbridge) fetched only 6d under the top pen. There were again two large drafts of shorn wethers, and in the case of one consignment values were a shilling or two easier than for sheep from the sam; source offered last week. Four hundred and fifty-two two-shear halfbred and three-quarterbred sheep from Winterslow station sold from 46s 6d to 545, and 357 shorn wethers from Mount Oakden realised from 43s to 525. Small pens of shorn wethers made up to 57s 6d.

SPRING LAMBS There was a much bigger yarding of spring lambs than last week—l6s compared with 77. Quality was generally fairly good except for a few very plain pens, which were not wanted. The sale was sound for good butchers’ quality, otherwise easier by about 2s a head. The top price was obtained by one from J. W. Mitchell (Doyleston). This was 84s Id. Good lambs sold from 73s Id to 84s Id, average from 65s Id to 72s Id, ana others down to 60s Id. Sales included:— Pyne, Gould, Guinness Ltd., sold: on account of G. Butler (Rakaia), 1 at 75s Id; R. FAT HOGGETS The hogget sale was an erratic one, and a fair proportion of the yarding, which was plain and unfinished, sold at reduced rates. Several pens were passed and sold later as stores. Although the big yarding was generally harder to sell, some gooa prices were obtained, particularly for the choice quality offering. There were only a few woolly hoggets. The yarding was 1341, against 786 last week. The best price of the day was 86s Id for two from Miss S. Mason (Hawarden) and two from S. Mason. FAT SHEEP The fat sheep yarding totalled 3117 head compared with 2811 last week. Apart from a few pens of choice sheep which sold on a par with late rates, the sale was inclined to be a dragging one for wethers, with values back 3s or 4s. Plainer type wethers were relatively hard to sell, and in many cases these did not attract any attention at all. The sale, however, showed an erratic tendency, and towards the close the demand for wethers showed some improvement.

Ewes met a fairly free sale with prices from a par to a shade better, and in some cases the less attractive type of ewes were easier to quit. Shorn wethers sold to 89s Id for six from J. P. Smith (Springbank). Sales of shorn old ewes ranged up to about 43s Id. Ten woolly ewes from W. J. Doyle (Leeston) realised 67s Id. Values were:— Best shorn wethers, to 89s Id. There was a firm demand for good quality, especially choice two-year-olds suitable for chiller beef, but buyers neglected low condition animals. Prices were generally not as high as might be expected at this time of the year. However, 10 two-year-old Aberdeen Angus steers from R. A. Hollis and Son (Hawarden) brought £36 18s 6d, and several good lines made more than £3O. DAIRY CATTLE The dairy cattle entry was down to only 34 head, and the quality for both cows and heifers was only average. The attendance of prospective buyers was at no time large, and the sale was generally lifeless. Except for the few good Friesian cows on offer, prices for cows and heifers were back by about 20s to 30s on last week’s rates. Best second, third and fourth calvers sold at £l9 to £25, with one sale at £2B 10s; medium, £l3 to £18; aged and inferior and cows in milk, down to £4 10s. Best heifers ranged from £l6 to £24, with small and inferior sorts down to about £5. VEALERS In the veal section there was a large yarding with the quality in many pens below that of last week. The Competition was slacker and, except for small calves, the sale was in many places 20s to 30s down on last week. Among the small calves, prime quality brought £7 to £lO, with good sorts selling at £4 10s to £6 10s. Good, large runners sold at £24 to £2B 3s 6d; good vealers. £l9 to £23 18s 6d, lighter vealers, £l6 to £lB 18s 6d; others, £l2 to £l5 18s 6d; light and rough, down to £B. FAT PIGS The porker entry was again a fairly large one and included two trucks from outside districts. Quality once again was not up to the usual standard. The sale, however, for all classes was a very satisfactory one, and values fully maintained last week’s rates. In the chopper section the entry was much lighter, but values showed little change. Baconers were forwarded in medium numbers, and the sale was better by fully 10s a head. Values were:— Light porkers, £5 17s 6d to £6 12s 6d. Medium, £6 14s 6d to £7 9s 6d. Heavy porkers, £7 12s 6d to £8 3s 6d. Choppers, £8 13s 6d to £l5 3s 6d. Baconers, £8 19s 6d to £ll 3s 6d. STORE PIGS The store pig entry was similar in size to that of last week, and consisted mainly of good quality weaners. Only a few pens of large stores were yarded. The attendance of buyers was a little larger, but outside competition forced the market up and values were better by 5s to 10s a head. Values were:— Small weaners, 74s to 80s. Best weaners, 82s to 88s. Slips. 90s to 98s. Small and medium stores, £5 to £5 10s. Large stores, £5 15s to £6 6s.
