Miss Iris J. Martin, Dominion president of the New Zealand Registered Nurses’ Association, writing from Turkey, described a busy week she spent there recently as a delegate to the board of directors’ meeting of the International Council of Nurses. Miss Martin spoke highly of the hospitality of the Turkish Nurses’ Association, which did everything possible to make the delegates’ stay pleasant and profitable. Miss Shirley Timpson, of Wellington, will spend Labour week-end with her parents, Mr and Mrs J. W. Timpson, of Yaldhurst road, for the twentyfirst birthday party of her sister, Miss Helen Timpson. Miss Shirley Timpson, who is a cosmetic consultant and also a well-known fashion model, was selected to represent Canterbury in the “Miss Universe” contest in 1954. She will return to Wellington on Monday. A pleasant afternoon party was held recently at the rooms of the League for the Hard of Hearing in Cashel street, to honour Miss Mary Enright, formerly lady editor of “The Press.” On her arrival, Miss Enright received a floral spray. After afternoon tea, Miss Ash, a former senior teacher of lipreading classes, spoke appreciatively of Miss Enright’s untiring service to the league, and on behalf of the members presented her with a gift. The largest number of visitors for some time was welcomed by the Canterbury Travel Club at its meeting yesterday. They were mainly representatives from various parts of New Zealand, who are attending the conference of the Electrical Supply Authorities Association. They included Sir William and Lady Jordan, of Auckland, who will leave on Friday for Palmerston North. The Mayoress (Mrs R. M. Macfarlane) was also welcomed, and visitors from several other travel clubs. Songs were sung by Mrs Nola Hamilton, and the accompan st was Mrs J. H. Cocks. hostesses were Mrs Mollie McNab and Mrs J. Members of the Christchurch branch of the New Zealand Family Planning Association held their final meeting of the year last evening and listened with interest to a talk on the operation of the Watford and District Family Planning Association by its vice-president (Mrs E. Brook). Mrs P. Zeff presided and announced that more than £lOO was in hand for the clinic fund. She also reported that a conference of the executive of the New Zealand Family Planning Association will be held in Christchurch next April.
