BOXING RANDOLPH TURPIN TO RETIRE

BID FOR TITLE BOUT FAILS KNOCKOUT AT HARRINGAY (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 10 p.m.) LONDON, October 19. Gordon Wallace, of Brantford, Ontario, knocked out Randolph Turpin, the British Empire light-heavy-weight champion, in the fourth round of a scheduled 10-round bout at Harringay last night. After the knockout, Turpin announced his retirement. Wallace, a little-known 26-year-old Canadian watersider, shattered Turpin’s world title hopes in their nontitle meeting. Turpin, who stood to gain a title match against the world champion, Archie Moore, next January, was only a shadow last night of the vicious fighter who won the world middle-weight title in 1951. Wide open to the wild swinging righthand punches of the Canadian, Turpin was soon reduced to glassyeyed marionette.
