HONOUR FOR DR. SCHWEITZER

QUEEN TO BESTOW ORDER OF MERIT

LONDON, October 18. Acclaimed throughout the world as one of the greatest humanitarians of modern times, Dr. Albert Schweitzer will go to Buckingham Palace tomorrow to receive the rarest honour that Queen Elizabeth can bestow on a foreigner—the Order of Merit.

The 80-year-old philosopher, theologian, musician, and surgeon renounced a brilliant academic career to devote his life to the service of his fellow beings. He has worked in the jungle of French Equatorial Africa as a medical missionary for 43 years. Dr. Schweitzer was “at home” in London this week to hundreds of friends. His headquarters are the rear premises of a small West End restaurant.

Asked whether, if he had to live his life over again, he would plan it as before, or modify it in the light of his experience. Dr. Schweitzer said: “I would do everything—both intelligent and unintelligent—in the same way as before. If I did otherwise, I might commit more stupidities than I have actually done. If I did it more cleverly, there might be more blunders.”
