LIFE-SAVING SOCIETY

CANTERBURY BRANCH ACTIVITIES

TEN INDIVIDUAL-AWARD RECORDS

Ten individual-award records were created in the 1954-1955 swimming season, says the forty-fifth annual report of the Canterbury branch of the Royal Life-Saving Society

These records were established in the elementary, unigrip, bronze medallion, bar to bronze medallion, R.L.S.S. instructors, bronze cross, bar to bronze cross, award of merit, bar to award of medit and distinction awards. "The issue of 1493 awards for the season comes very close to our record issue of 1624 in 1952-1953,” says the report, which will be presented at the branch’s annual meeting next week. Twenty-two schools are now affiliated to the branch, as well as 17 swimming and surf clubs and the Canterbury centre of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association.

During the season, the branch was asked by some school instructors whether the Monica Thacker and Sir John Hall Shield competitions could be revived, said the report. "The stumbling block is still the conditions at the Centennial Pool.” it says. “The branch committee would do everything in its power to arrange the competitions if schools would permit their teams to take part at a time when conditions at the pool would be suitable.” Some changes were made in the allocation of the branch’s trophies for competition, says the report. Special mention is made of the excellent results achieved by girls and boys of the Woolston School, and of the high percentage of marks gained by Craighead Diocesian School and St. Margaret's College. Almost every school has increased its percentage of points in comparison with last year. List of Awards The following awards were made during the last season:—Resuscitation certificate 1. NORTH BEACH CLUB Confidence in the club’s prospects in the coming season is expressed in the annual report of the North Beach Surf Life-Saving Club. Membership was 155. with 36 new members admitted during the year and only three resignations.

The pavilion was in good order, and the gear in excellent condition, said the report. In its efforts to foster a strong junior section the committee was building two miniature reels for use this season by the junior-juniors. During the year 10 rescues were made from the beach by club members—four of them outside the patrol area ‘‘which makes the task more difficult.” The club is to place an order for the latest nylon line for the reels, and is negotiating for an electric alarm system.

An excess of £l5 13s fid of expenditure over income is reported. Members are warned that too many of them are behind in their subscriptions, and heavier penalties are to be introduced to keep all members financial.
