FLOODING IN NORTHLAND
THOUSANDS OF ACRES INUNDATED
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND. October 5. Thousands of acres of lowlands in the Matarana Valley, near Kaikohe, is experiencing its worst floods for years. The power has been off since midday, and many herds in the district were not milked tonight. Most of the homes in the area are surrounded by water, and stock losses are exoected to be heavy. Telephone lines are down throughout the district. The main road to Matarana is under water in areas which have never previously been flooded. The main road west of Kaikohe is also flooded, and was three feet under water this afternoon. Lightning struck a large transformer at Kaikohe tonight, throwing the town into darkness for nearly an hour.
Children from the Horeke farming district were billeted at Okaihau tonight, as their school bus was unable to pass over the Mangataire bridge. The main highway north from Kaikohe is blocked at Rangiahua, and one bridge is reported to have been swept away.
At Kawakawa. the main road and all low-lying land is under at least two feet of water. Rain was still falling heavily late tonight.
