TOURNAMENT AT AUCKLAND

HOCKEY

CANTERBURY BEATS WAIKATO PLAY IN CHALLENGE SHIELD (New Zealand Press Association/ AUCKLAND. Aug. »• Ground and overhead conditions were ideal for the opening day of the New Zealand Challenge Shield tournament today. The players were welcomed by the Mayor (Mr J. H. Luxford) and the president of the Auckland Hockey Associa-

tion (Mr A. E. Playle). The best game of the series was that between Canterbury and Waikato, and

although the former won 3-2. Waikato had the advantage in the second spell. Brilliant goalkeeping by Goldsmith saved the day for Canterbury. Hawke s Bay held Auckland to a draw. 1-all, but the game was disappointing as a spectacle. The players failed to combine and resorted more to individual efforts. Easily the most exciting game was that between Otago and Wairarapa. Both teams hit the ball about in good style and attempted to play constructively. Otago won 2-0, but it was the excellent goalkeeping of Harroway, for Otago, that kept the Wairarapa forwards from scoring. Results were as follows: Canterbury 3 (G. Howard. N. Hobson, and M. McKinnon were the scorers) beat Waikato 2 (R. Bedford and M. Irwin); Otago 2 (M. McKane 2) beat Wairarapa 0; Hawkes Bay 1 (T. Turbitt) drew with Auckland 1 (penalty goal). The following selectors have been appointed to choose the North and South Island teams for next Saturday:—North Island: Messrs H. E. Watts. D. Hastie. and G. Peace, all of Auckland. South Island: Messrs N. Mong (Otago). R. Randle (Canterbury), and T. Clark (Auckland).
