GEOTHERMAL POWER

FIRST TEST TO BE MADE SOON GENERATION FROM 6IN STEAM BORE (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, August 29. The first attempt to harness the mighty force of geothermal steam at Wairakei for producing electricity will be made in a few days. Technicians are now putting the finishing touches to a small power unit which will feed Ministry of Works equipment of 200 kilowatts potential. A transformer and power lines to take the power to the workshops have still to be built. The generating equipment will be fed from a 6in steam bore 20ft away, which has been blowing unabated for three years. The Ministry of Works has also purchased a larger generator of 1000 kilowatts to provide power for construction work on the combined electricity and heavy-water plant, which is due to begin production in 1958. Erection of the construction camp will begin in a few months.
