RESEARCH IN CHILD HEALTH
AMERICAN GRANT TO NEW ZEALANDER Dr. Stanley James, elder son of Mr and Mrs L. A. James, of Tauranga, has passed the examination of the American Board of Pediatrics, and has received a grant from the United States Government to continue his research for at least one year at Columbia University, New York City. His subject is the breathing of the newborn child. He will be attached as pediatrician
Ito the anaesthetic and obstetric department, and will work with Professor Virginia Apgar, a Welsh doctor in charge of the anaesthetic department. ’This work will commence on September 1. Dr. James has also received a grant .from the Carnegie Endowment Centre •for research work with Dr. R. Rowe. , 1 a New Zealander who has a research ► group working at Toronto's hospital for •; sick children. They will work together [! on respiratory problems. Dr. James left New Zealand in 1952 • to take a position at the hospital for s I sick children in Toronto. Next year • he was appointed one of the resident doctors at Bellevue Hospital.
