SOUTHDOWNS IN DEMAND

GRAND NATIONAL RAM HOGGET SALE Buyers from many parts of the Dominion were present at the sixth Grand National ram hogget, and registered ewe sale held this week on the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s grounds, Addington. About 350 ram hoggets and registered ewes were sold on account of the various breeders. In the ram hogget section, Southdowns were in very strong demand, about 150 changing hands on account of various local breeders at from 18 guineas upwards, with an average over the whole offering of 22 guineas. The highest price of 26 guineas was received for the top pen of an exceptionally high-class consignment sent forward by Mrs G. K. Woodhouse, Racecourse HUI. The balance of . the fattening breeds section of the catalogue was made up of a consignment of Suffolks which averaged 9j guineas, and several lots of Southdown-Border Leicester and Border Leicester-Southdown hoggets from local breeders, the top price for these being 17 guineas obtained for an attractive pen sold on account of Wilson and Wilson, Kirwee. A small lot of South Suffolk-Shropshire hoggets averaged M guineas. In the wool breeds section, two consignments of Corriedale ram hoggets from North Canterbury breeders were sold at an average of 6 guineas, and a draft of Romney ram hoggets from the Manawatu averaged 8 guineas, while others from local breeders averaged 7. guineas. In the female section, an attractive consignment of South Suffolk ewe hoggets offered on behalf of Mr G. D. Neave, Meadowbank, averaged 5 guineas. The remainder of the catalogue was made up of registered Corriedale ewes. The auctioneers were Pyne, Gould Guinness Ltd.
