KING’S FAIR TO RETURN

AUSTRALIAN RACING CANCELLED (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) SYDNEY. Aug. 12. King’s Fair is to be scratched from his Australian engagements and will return to New Zealand. King’s Fair has been the best backed candidate in early discussions on the Epsom Handicap, and was firm on the second line of favouritism. He will be brought from Newcastle to Sydney by float on Monday, and will return to New-Zealand in the Wanganellaon Thursday. _ Mrs A. H. Christmas, who trains tne gelding, issued ■ warning • to pre-poirt backers after King’s Fair had failed badly in Yhe Doomben Ten Thousand early ita July. . *“ Starting a hot favourite at 6 to 4, the gelding finished a long way behind the winner,.-Apple Bay. A subsequent examination showed that King’s Fair was suffering from a form of grain poinomng, and he has not raced since. After the diagnosis, Mrs Christmas announced that King’s Fair would not be raced again in Australia unless he made a complete recovery. The scratching of King's Fair will aito upset pre-post discussions on the Cameron Handicap and the Newcastle Cup double, to be run on August 27 and September 3. King’s Fair was one of the opening favourites' for the Cameron Handicap. Doubles backing for King’s Fair in the Epsom has been steady during the last week. ~He has been coupled with the leading Metropolitan candidates for tens of thousands of pounds. His withdrawal will cause a general tightening of the present doubles market. One leading doubles bookmaker said that the price of the favourite Somerset Fair, might be reduced by half.
