RACING LINCOLN STEEPLES AT RICCARTON

Treasure Ring Has Good Chance

BRUE FAVOURED FOR HURDLES

Treasure Ring and Brue will have heavy backing for their attempts to improve an already splendid record for Mr I. R. Robinson at Riccarton on the third and concluding day of the Grand National meeting today.

Treasure Ring, winner of the Homeby-Grand National Steeples double, is engaged in the Lincoln Steeplechase, and Brue in the Sydenham Hurdles. Brue is the only one of four members of the Robinson team that has not won on the visit. But his fourth in the Jumpers’ Flat, and more particularly his good second to Solar Mist in the Grand National Hurdles, have made him an outstanding form prospect for today’s engagement.

Treasure Ring is top weight with 10-4 in the Lincoln Steeples. He will be carrying 161 b more than his Grand National weight over three miles, a distance that might trouble the Beaufort Steeples winner, Chief Justice. Ironside should be an improved horse for his race in the Beaufort Steeplechase, his first over country since he won the Otago Steeplechase in June. And a firmer track will brighten the chance of Belgravia, a good third in this race last year. A firmer track will make The McDonough and Mainiander more attractive prospects for the Sydenham Hurdles. They may be two of Brue’s strongest opponents. There will be solid support, too, for Leighford, a decisive winner of the Jumpers’ Flat last Saturday.

Leighford did not contest the Grand National Hurdles, and may have the edge on several which had hard runs on Tuesday.

Vitalogy and Josudj were scratched yesterday for the Islington Handicap, the first leg of the double. That allowed Suphero and Ngapunawai to reenter the field. There were still four left on the reserve list, among them Ballast, the Winter Cup fourth. Royal Warrant and Olayva, winners of the Winter Cup and Heathcote Handicap respectively, are engaged in the Islington Handicap, and on form their chances have to be respected. Royal Warrant may not be such a force to reckon with on the firm track likely today. Tbp-weight of S-ll may not stop Ocean Flight, runner-up in the Winter Cup, from turning the tables on Royal Warrant this time. And Ttsla, the Heathcote Handicap second, will have solid backing for his attempt to improve on that placing. TesU Ins shown his best form as a miler, bin is bred to run out a mile and a .quarter solidly. Nickola was scratched yesterday for the August Handicap, the second leg of the double. The form horses for this mile test ere Adversary, Silence. Super Maru. and Gold Tip. Silence will be ridden by C. McDonald. who will be on Ocean Flight, one of the favourites for the Islington Hand Iran Spike Jones Improved Spike Jones may give Riccarton a successful start for the day in the Styx Hurdles. Mr J. F. Kerr’s five-year-sld Milling gelding has ihiproved with each race lately, and from his place in the weights may end the unbeaten run of Pad on the .course, although the .improved going could lighten the load of the top-weight. The Cashmere Plate winner, Persia, maybe Mr G. J. Barton's represent*tive in the Aylesbury Handicap. There is nothing wrong with his bracketed mate. Art Royal, but the smart Marco Poio n colt may be left in bis box. Ben Led! and White Hart both had bad luck in the Cashmere Plate, so there was particular’ merit in Ben Ledi's placing. Both should race well, and so should King of Joy, which got etoMatJp PKdi at the finish of the ShoaL a doubie acceptor, is assured of a run in the Longbeach Handicap. Ji W. Harris has been engaged to ride het in fhat race. She was balloted out ct: the Reddiffa Handicap, and will not get a run there, unless there Clarion, winner <rf three of his last four races, will be a firm favourite for the Longbeach Handicap. He is versatile, and improved track conditions have no* dimmed his chance. Few if any in the Redelifts Handicap will appreciate a dry track more than the smart Invercargill-trained Defallock. which was not at ease in conditions earlier at the meeting. Defallock should be a strong opponent for Sir Gerald and Coin's Edge, two of the best form runners.
