IMPROVING INDUSTRIAL RELATIONS

CITY FIRM’S GESTURE TO EMPLOYEES Improving the relationships between Management and Employees is something that is receiving the attention of industrialists and all classes of business everywhere. In recent years it has received more attention in this Dominion, and today is being given careful consideration by most large companies. Management realises that efficient operation depends on close understanding and goodwill between Management and Staff. A well-known Canterbury firm of reading engineers and constructors (British Pavements, Canterbury, Ltd.), who believe that Staff harmony ana industrial efficiency go together, have recently tried out a new idea with considerable success. The Company decided to set aside a dav to enable all its Staff to attend a function designed to promote acquaintance, while providing a programme of mutual interest and -instruction. Firm transport from construction camps throughout the province brought the men in while town workers, office staff and executives converged at midday on the appointed assembly place. Luncheon was followed by an afternoon session of addresses by guest speakers recognised as specialists in their particular fields. Also shown were films of topical material and company activity. After a short adjournment, staff again assembled with wives and partners to enjoy a six o’clock party and buffet tea before going on to the theatre. The large number present were unanimous that it was one of the most successful functions in the history of the When a firm' operates in widely dispersed localities it is a good idea for management and staff to meet off duty occasionally to discuss and share news and views of Company interest. It is interesting to learn of developments like this taking place, indicating the importance p’aced by progressive firms upon the welfare and awareness of their employees.
