SOVIET RELATIONS WITH AUSTRALIA

Renewal Discussed In Washington (Rec. 8.30 pm.) WASHINGTON, August 11. The possibility of restoring diplomatic representation between the Soviet Umoh and Australia was under active discussion in diplomatic quarters today. The Soviet Union withdrew its Ambassador from Canberra and ordered the Australian mission from Moscow last year in protest against the Australian Government’s granting of asylum to Mr Vladiihir Petrov, the former head of the Soviet intelligence service in Australia. A number of officials today expressed the opinion that the chances of restoration of diplomatic representation between the two countries now seemed brighter than for months. A Soviet official told a Reuter correspondent, after consulting senior authorities of the Soviet Embassy, that he had the impression the Soviet Government would be willing to discuss the matter through diplomatic channels.
