WOOLSTON RAIL YARD EXTENSIONS

IMPROVED LOADING OF TRUCKS Ektensions are to be carried out at the Woolston railway yards to improve facilities for the loading of trucks. New tracks will be laid including a lay-by loop to enable goods trains from Lyttelton and Christchurch to be received clear of the main line. To make room for the extensions the Railways Department has purchased a strip of land 20 feet wide and 7 chains long on the north side of the yards. This land is at present being cleared and contains a row of trees which will have to be pulled up. It is proposed to move an outdoor loading shelter a distance of about five chains to make way for the new tracks. Overhead power lines will also have to be shifted although there will be! no new ones erected as the shunting will be, done by diesel engine. '
