TOWN HALL
Sir,—Although we do not all agree on the site, a town hall is a necessity for Christchurch. Councillor McCombs is not there to criticise the ratepayers, whether they make a row or not. The boot is on the other foot. Ratepayers are entitled to criticise him and other councillors and parliamentarians on how their money is spent. Concerning the civic block, could not St. Elmo flats be included as homes for the aged, with their up-to-date amenities and handiness to pleasing surroundings and entertainment? Recently at the Civic Theatre the cold was so intense that men donned overcoats and performers froze in front of nodding floral decorations. As prevailing wirids are easterly or southerly, let the new hall be built for comfort before architectural splendour.—Yours, etc., J. FRASER. August 9, 1955.
