SEVERE HAILSTORM AT AUCKLAND

MANY GARDENS DAMAGED (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, August 11. Jagged hailstones an inch across battered the New Lynn-Titirangi area of Auckland about 7.30 a.m. today. Residents said it was the heaviest fall they had seen. Many gardens were damaged. Heralded by thunder and lightning, the hailstones grew steadily in size as the 10-minute storm continued. The first were rounded and only half an inch through. But the last to fall were fantastically shaped, some looking like starfish. The storm was confined to a fairly narrow belt. Weather Office experts said that the shape of the hail was very unusual.

y It . would be caused by great turbue lence in the cumulo-nimbus clouds I. where the hail formed.
