RACING FINAL DAY OF C.J.C. MEETING

Ocean Flight Selected In First Leg

ADVERSARY MAY BE BEST OF MILERS

Ocean Flight and Tesla, the Winter Cun and Heathcote Handicap runners-un, will both have solid backing in the Islington Handicap, the first leg of the double on the third and final day of the Canterbury Jockey Club's Grand National meeting tomorrow.

They are expected to fare best of those well up in the weights, but could be troub’ed by Josudi, an improver in the middle of the handicap.

Ocean Flight is at the top of the handicap with Berne. He has 9-H, or 4’b more than he carried into second place, a head from Royal Warrant, in the Winter Cup. It is a task that will test him to the utmost, but his class will stand to him in the end if he gets a reasonably good run.

Tesla was a surprise second favourite for the Winter Cup last Saturday. He failed badly—almost as badlv as he did at the Welling'on winter meeting. But something of the old Tesla was seen on Tuesday, when the Otaki-trained Bulandshar gelding finished boldly for second behind Glayva in the Heathcote Handicap.

It was a heartening improvement in the form of this once good winner, and there may be better results from his next few performances.

Although Royal Warrant and Glayva, the Winter Cup and Heathcote Handicap winners, are engaged. Josudi’s chance could, perhaps, be brighter if he makes the expected improvement on his Heathcote Handicap sixth. Josudi’s four-year-old performances were of a good standard and hinted at better deeds this season. He was one of the slowest beginners in a big field on Tuesday, and a bold run was needed to carry him so close to the money. Josudi is 161 b below Ocean Flight in the weights, and with that advantage, he will be expected to trouble the smart Riverton galloper. Ocean Flight has done most of his racing at a mile or less, but was twice tested over a mile and a quarter at Awapuni in the autumn. He finished boldly ot run Golden Eve to a neck in the King George Handicap, and finished fifth in the Awapuni Gold Cup after pace-making to the straight. Berne was beaten a good way out under 9-13 in the Winter Cup, and a relief of 21b should not brighten his chance over another two furlongs. Meresun’s prospects look brighter, for there was merit in his Winter Cup and Heathcote Handicap sixths. The Wake’s Prospects The Wake was one of the slowest beginners in the Heathcote Handicap. He put in a long run to gain a good x position early in the run home, but was beaten outside the furlong. His performance did not compare favourably with Josudi’s. The Waimate galloper appears to have a better chance here. Good Abbot and Fulgent are finding difficulty in improving their records from their present places in the weights. Royal Warrant should be more than a match for them under any conditions, and will return strongly tc favour it more rain makes the track conditions like they were last Saturday Royal Warrant has done most of his racing as a miler and over less ground but this distance should not reveal any limitations. He has been a powerful finisher in all ins recent races. Glayva has gone up 91b for hei Heathcote Handicap success. She was in front practically from the start on Tuesday, and competently kept clear ol all would-be challengers. An all-the-way win under a bigger weight over another furlong would be a much tougher test, but she must still be considered in her present form. Relinquish may be the best of those below Josudi and assured of a run. Problem Horse Super Maru is the problem horse in the field for the August Handicap, the second leg of the double. He would have been one of the best-backed runners for the Selwyn Handicap on Tuesday, but he was withdrawn from thal race because he resisted all attempts tc take him on to the track to work or the previous day. Super Manx’s Winter Cup third stamped him as a very brilliant galleper. He did not get a winding-ug run in the Brabazon Handicap because of his refusal to line up at the start and that could have cost him the .winner’s share of the Winter Cui stake. Riccarton should be well represented • by Adversary, and possibly by Pack BrillAdversary was fourth and Pack Drill second in the Brabazon Handicap. Pack Drill failed in the Wintex Cup, but Adversary held his form well, beating all but Ngatoki in the Paparua Handicap, and then brilliantly beating that North Island sprinter in the Selwyn Handicap. Adversary swamped the others for finishing speed in the Selwyn Handicap with a run that carried him from the tail of a handy-sized field. It will be surprising if he is beaten by another furlong tomorrow. Silence’s strong late run for fourth in the Paparua Handicap showed he was a much improved horse after the Brabazon Handicap a week earlier. He would not have to make nearly so much improvement again to beat this field. Such a proved weight-carrier will have a big following. Gold Tip was having his first race since the autumn, when he finished boldly for fifth in the Paparua Handicap, so some improvement can reasonably be expected. Gold Tip did none of his racing in class as strong as this last season, but raced well m metropolitan company earlier in his career. Walkova, the Selwyn Handicap third, and the improved Riccarton sprinter Okaruru look the best of the light-weights. Finn Favourite The Grand National Steeples winner, Treasure Ring, will be a pronounced favourite for the Lincoln Steeplechase. The Lincoln is a race that many Grand National winners have passed by, and the double has eluded many other good ’chasers, including Coalition, Billy Boy, Peter Maxwell, and vaipeen. But Treasure Ring was a Grand National light-weight, and he has only 10-4 to master tomorrow. The Matangi jumner’s sound jumning and seasoned condition should lighten the task for him. He may not be a ole to teach Ironside, the main South pland hope, anything about jumping, but he may shade him for fitness. Ironside missed the Homeby and Grand National Steeplechases because of unsoundness, but recovered quickly, and made a good impression in his first test over the Riccarton country in the Beaufort Steeples on Tuesday He finished fourth, making no improvement over the last three furlongs, but there was a good deal of merit in his run because he made up a big stretch of ground ail the way along the back. If unsoundness has passed him by since that race, the improvement in his condition should be noticeable in his performance toThe Tongs, the Grand National third, will probably be going more strongly than the Beaufort winner, Chief Justice, at the end of three miles That may be the case, too, with Belgravia, which was a good third ip this race last year, and got closest to Chief Justice on Tuesday. The'drier the track, the better Belgravia should

Ryeland was a well-beaten fifth in the Grand National, but he may have lost a chance of finishing third when he was checked by a fallen horse at the kennels double on the last round. He pulled up very tired, but sound, and if his hard race did not take its toll of him, he should be a fitter horse for this test. Chance for Spike Jones Spike Jones is the logical favourite for the Styx Hurdles, but he will not find it easy to break the winning run of the Ma tan; i-trained Pad, which is unbeaten in two starts at Riccarton. A long neck separated these two hurdlers at the end of two miles in the Styx Hurdles on Tuesday. Pad now has list 71b to master, and Spike Jones will meet him on 61b better terms. The Riccarton hurdler should be improving and appears to have a first-class chance of gaining his first win as a jumper for Mr J. F. Kerr. Northcliffe was unlucky enough to be brought down by another runner on Tuesday. He has enough ability to fill one of the places. If the track is firmer than earlier at the meeting, the chance of Some Bounder will brighten His fourth on Tuesday was an improver’s effort. The Cashmere Plate winner. Persia, will form a strong bracket with Ark Royal for the Aylesbury Handicap, a sprint for the three-year-old hacks. Ark Royal was an unlucky fifth in a division of the Haldon Stakes at the Christchurch Hunt Club’s meeting, and showed all the ability evident in his two-year-old races in the autumn. He made a big impression when he ran third behind Avenge and Motueka in the Champagne Stakes at Riccarton. and may not be the weaker part of the bracket. Ben Ledi, an unlucky third in the Cashmere Plate, may fare better this Hme than King of Joy, the runner-up ’n that race. Luck was also against White Hart in the Cashmere Plate. Like Ben Ledi. he carried the barrier early and lost his chance. His earlier form in the North Island was of a good standard, and should be the best guide. Over this distance. Beau Chat may fare best of the others. Logical Favourite Brue, runner-up to Solar Mist in the Grand National Hurdles, is the logical favourite for the Sydenham Hurdles. He is a consistent performer and a sound stayer well down in the weights and none of the others above or below him appears to have such good form credentials. If the ground is reasonably good. The M-Ponough and Mainlander should play bigger roles than they did in the Grand National Hurdles. Under any conditions. Leighford will have a chance to be resnected for this, his first run over hurdles at the meeting. Lei”hford showed his fitness to win the Jumpers’ Flat on the first day of the meeting. . Clarion and Sir Gerald, both winners on Tuesday, will’, probably be favourites for the Longbeach and Redcliffs Hack Handicaps respectively. Both won stylishly, and their lifts in the weights should not settle their chances. Cppperfield, a fast-finishing third on Tuesday, will probably be One of Clarion’s strongest opponents. Sir Gerald may be tested most ,by Defallock if the track is dry, and by Coin’s Edge, a fast-finishing third from well back over nine furlongs on Tuesday. <
