INVERCARGILL WOOL SALE

CRUTCHINGS BRING LOWER PRICES (New Zealand Press Association) INVERCARGILL, August 11. Prices for crutchings were slightly below last year's Dunedin-.values at the first wool sale for Otago ahd Southland in the 1955-56 series, held in Invercargill today. Most of the offering of 11,054 bales was crutchings. but about 150 bales of pre-lamb shorn wool were offered and met spirited, competition, prices for crossbred wool ranging up to 59d. For the first time Otago wool was offered at the sale, although it remained on display at Dunedin.

The sale was notable for the slow selling. Bidding was not animated except when the bales of fleece wool were being offered. The competition was general and well spread, with America and Australia competing for coarser types. Local mills operated strongly. The crutchings offered lacked the style of the previous season’s wool. Much of the offering was damp and muddy. The degree of dirtiness of the bales accounted for price fluctuations during the sale. The highest price in thin wools was for a bale of extra coarse super crutchings, a binned lot, at 61Jd. Seven-bales of super crutchings made 60d. The Continent and Bradford buyers operated strongly when the 150 bales of Southland fleece wool were offered. The official range of prices is:—
