Dulles Expects Progress In Talks With China

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 9 p.m.) WASHINGTON, August 10. The United States Secretary of State, Mr Dulles, said today he hoped to get from the Chinese Communists tomorrow clarification which would permit the United States-Communist Chinese talks in Geneva to make progress. Mr Dulles, at his press conference, was answering a question about the Chinese Communist suggestion that a third party should assist in bringing about the repatriation of Chinese civilians living in the United States and United States civilians detained in China. Mr Dulles repeatedly refused to comment on all the aspects of the Geneva talks. He said that for him to comment would not help the negotiations, but he added his hope of clarification tomorrow of the Chinese Communist position on civilians. He said that one reason for refusing to comment was the fact that human lives and welfare were involved and the United States chief concern was to rescue Americans who had suffered considerable hardship.
