GISBORNE'S POPULATION NOW THAT OF A CITY.-The Mayor of Gisborne has been advised by the Government Statistician that the population of the town is estimated to have passed 20,000, the minimum requirement for city status. However, the proclamation of the borough as a city will be deferred un until after next year’s national census. This aerial photograph shows the central part of Gisborne. In the foreground is the Turanganui river with a braekwater separating the harbour area (right). The population of the Gisborne urban area is about 21,500.
