GISBORNE NOW A CITY

FOURTEENTH IN DOMINION (New Zealand Press Association) GISBORNE, August 10. Gisborne has become New Zealand's fourteenth city. The Mayor (Mr H. H. Barker) received advice today from the Government Statistician that the population of the borough was now estimated to have reached 20,000. Official ceremonies for the proclamation of the borough as a city will be deferred until the results of the national census next year are declared. Cities ahead of Gisborne, based on figures published in the monthly Abstract of Statistics and shown as at April 1, 1954, are:— Christchurch, 141,000; Auckland, 134,000; Wellington, 127,700; Dunedin, 71,900; Lower Hutt, 47:800; Palmerston North, 34,200; Hamilton. 33,300; Wanganui, 29.500; Invercargill, 28,400; New Plymouth, 24,000: Timaru, 23,100; Napier, 21,800; Nelson, 18,250. Nelson is a city because it has a cathedral and is the seat of a bishop.
