RELIEF SERVICES OVERSEAS

DISTRIBUTION CENTRE IN HONG KONG The C juncil of Organisations for Relief Service Overseas had no link with China and its only distribution centre in the part of that world was Hon§ Kong, said a letter from the Wellington headquarters of the organisation received at the monthly meeting of the Canterbury CORSO committee. The general secretary of the Y.M.C.A., who was formerly of Christchurch, acted for the organisation in Hong Kong. A supplied report from the committee said that with the improvement now evident in international relations throughout the world it was agreed that CORSO could be a greater factor in increasing the goodwill of the people of South-east Asia, India and Korea. At the CORSO clothing collection to be held in Canterbury on September 17 it was hoped to double the 1954 total. Very large quantities of milk powder, medical supplies, and cash donations to hospitals in India and elsewhere had already left this year. It was estimated that there were more than 100,000,000 destitute children in the world today. Sub-committees were set up to take charge of collecting, sorting and packing the clothing which this year would be handled at the New Zealand Locin and Mercantile Agency’s wool store at Addington, the report said.
