RACING THIRD DAY AT RICCARTON

Matangi Horses Likely To Race Well

Horses from Mr I. Robinson’s Matangi stable have won £4525 in stakes on their Riccarton ' campaign, and they should make substantial contributions to Their good records on the third and final day of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s Grand National meeting on Saturday. Treasure Ring will be a pronounced favourite for the Lincoln Steeplechase, in which he will attempt to preserve an unbeaten record over the Riccarton country. The Grand National and Homeby Steeples winner is top weight with lOst 41b for this three-mile test. He will not be opposed by Every Time, and should safely hold the others he beat in the Grand National. Treasure Ring’s winnings on his Riccarton campaign are £2840, and success in the Lincoln Steeples would boost them by £lOOO. Chief Justice and Ironside, the Beaufort Steeples winner and fourth on Tuesday, are closest to Treasure Ring in the handicap. Chief Justice was not sefiouslv tested over two and a half miles in the Beaufort, his bold jumping and strong gallop out in front keeping him well clear. Chief Justice has a mych tougher test ahead of him over another halfmile in this company, and he may not offer Treasure Ring opposition as strong as Ironside, provided the Washdyke jumper was all right after his race.

i Ironside was having his first race, over country since June in the Beaufort Steeples. He was a long way out of touch with the leaders until fairly late in the race, but smooth jumping helped him to recover many lengths all the way down the back. He moved into fourth place running to the second last fence, but that was just about the encl of his run, and he could not improve further. Ironside’s run confirmed earlier impressions that the big Riccarton fences would not trouble him. Fit and well for Saturday’s test, he may be Treasure Ring’s strongest opponent. Brue is the only member of the Robinson team that has failed to win a race on the trip so far, but his performance to beat all but Solar Mist in the Grand National Hurdles has made him the early favourite for the Sydenham Hurdles Good Record Brue’s Grand National Hurdles second and his fourth in the Jumpers’ Flat were worth £530, which makes him a better winner for the stable than Baylona. the Enfield Steeples winner. The six-year-old brother to Golden Tan was put to hurdling in March, and his record from 11 starts in that role is three wins, two seconds, three thirds, two fourths, and one fifth. It it a very good record, and one that should look better after Saturday. Solar Mist was not entered this year for the Sydenham Hurdles, a race he has already won twice, and Noon is top weight with lOst 121 b, 21b less than he carried in the ‘Grand National Hurdles, in which he was beaten a good way out. On Grand National Hurdles form, Noon and the seven others higher in the weights than Erue should be safely held by the Matangi hurdler, though a drying track would brighten the chances of The McDonough and Mainlander.

Pad, like Treasure Ring, will be attempting to preserve an unbeaten record for Mr Robinson at Riccarton on Saturday. An acceptor for the Styx Hurdles, this .five-year-old Paper Slipper gelding won the Longbeach Hack Hurdles with lOst 31b at the Christchurch Hunt Club’s meeting, and the Spreydon Hurdles under lOst 111 b on Tuesday. Those successes were worth £740, and he will take his earnings for the trip into four; figures if he wins again on Saturday. Pad is top Weight with list 71b in the Styx Hurdles, and a winning run will demand his very best, but success is by no means beyond him. A capacity field is practically certain for the Islington Handicap, the first leg of the double. Royal Warrant, winner of the Winter Cup and Brabazon Handicap, is engaged, and so is Ocean Flight, which ran him close in the Winter Cup. They will both have strong backing. So will Glayva and Tesla, winner and runner-up in the Heathcote Handicap on -Tuesday. The second leg is the August Handicap/which has attracted 24 acceptors. Silence, top weight with Ost 121 b, carried lOst strongly into fourth place in the Paparua Handicap last Saturday, so is one of the form horses. Another is the Riccarton-trained Adversary, decisive winner of the Selwyn Handicap on Tuesday. Over this distance last Saturday. Super Maru was just shaded by Royal Warrant and Ocean Flight, so there is good reason to respect the chance of this brilliant Washdyke galloper. Walkova, third in the Selwyn Handicap, may be the best of the four North Island horses in the field. The fields are:— 11.2 a.m.— STYX HURDLES,
