KENYA
Sir, —While hot condoning any form of exploitation of native races, I would remind “The Law” that terrorists in the Aberdares are a greater menace to other Africans than to the white population, who are obliged to protect to the best of their ability the many Africans who look to them for help. While in the neighbourhood of Nyeri in February, I met British social workers who are giving of their best to the many different tribes in Kenya, but their efforts are continually crippled by the ruthless intimidation of the gangsters. The Africans want what the Westerner can provide in the way of medical, educational, and technical assistance, and they know that the regressive activity of Mau Mau cannot benefit their race. The women, especially, are fed up with the trouble, and would take little inciting to attack, and although it sounds altogether shocking to us, would no doubt regard it as a great chance to let off steam.—Yours, etc., TRAVELLER.
