ROYAL VISIT TO ISLE OF MAN

Queen Presides Over Tynwald

DOUGLAS (Isle of Man), August 9. The Queen today presided over the British Commonwealth’s oldest Parliament when she paid her first visit to the Isle of Man, the pleasure island and holiday resort half-way between England and Northern Ireland. With the Duke of Edinburgh, the Queen, who is “Lord of Man” visited the island’s legislative buildings to preside over the Court of Tynwald, g 1000-year-old Parliament with traditions going back further than the Westminster legislature. The Royal visit was the high point of a 60-mile island drive, watched by thousands of island inhabitants and holidaymakers: The Queen, replying to an address of welcome, said: “I am especially proud to preside at this gathering of the Tynwald, which has had a continuous history of more than 1000 years and is the oldest Parliament in all the countries of which I am the Queen.” She ended with a greeting in the ancient Manx Gaelic language: “As ish. moghey mie as aigh vie” (and now, good morning and good luck”).
