RECORD RATE OF EMPLOYMENT
65,000,000 At Work In America (Rec. 10 p.m.) WASHINGTON, Aug. 9. The United States Government reported today that a record number of 64,995.000 Americans were employed in July. This compared with 64,016,000 in June, also a record. A joint report by the Commerce and Labour Departments said the booming American economy was responsible. It also said unemployment dropped from 2,679,000 in June to 2,471,009 last month. July was the fifth successive month in which employment had increased. The report said the rate had not been matched since the 1946 post-war reconversion era. Most of the July rise was due to an unusually large number of students taking employment during their summer holiday. booming economy had caused some uneasiness in high Government circles and jome mild “brakes” were applied recently on home'loans and bank credit.
