CHRISTCHURCH MOVIE CLUB

SHOWS PLANNED TO AID APPEAL FOR AGED To assist the Christchurch Rotary Club’s appeal for the aged the Christchurch Movie Club plans to run a series of film evenings next month. The president (Mr L. T. C. Hudson) said yesterday that the programmes, which would be different each evening, would be made up of members’ films. “The audience reaction to the programme of 10 films we screened to mark our tenth anniversary was so good that we decided to put on the screen evenings,” said Mr Hudson. “There is sufficient first-class material available from our members to make up three or four good programmes. Most of the films will be in colour, and in many cases they will be complete with natural sound effects, recordings, commentaries.” The antics of a skeleton which opened the lid of its coffin with a ghastly creak to perform a jerky dance to the tune of “Dry Bones,” an extensive tour of Great Britain, and a flight over the Southern Alps to drop the component parts of a new mountaineering hut, were among the subjects of films shown at the club’s festival.

“Royal Visit,” a film depicting the mood in Christchurch during the visit of Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh, was an outstanding 16 mm. production by Mr Hudson. A number of extensive aerial views of snow and ice covered mountains in one film were in direct contrast to the sunbathing holiday makers at Kaiteriteri in the next film, taken in the subtropical heat of a Golden Bay summer. An appreciative audience of about 350 members and guests almost completely filled the hall where the films were shown. Two films were shown with synchronised tape recording apparatus. Unrecorded spoken commentaries were used effectively during the programme, so too was a twin gramophone.
