RUGBY AND BASKETBALL AT TIMARU (From Our Own Reporter) TIMARU, August 9. The South Canterbury Primary School Sports Association was host for the annual all-Canterbury primary schools’ tournament, which opened in Timaru today, and will be completed tomorrow. Teams from Christchurch, Ashburton, and South Canterbury entered in the Rugby and basketball competitions. The Mayor of Timaru, Mr R. E. White, welcomed the teams and declared the tournament open. In the senior Rugby section. South Canterbury town schools lead With two wins, and will play Ashburton tomorrow. Christchurch is in a similar position in the junior section. The senior basketball competition was evenly contested. South Canterbury Town lead in this section, and the South Canterbury Country team lead in the junior section. Results were:— Rugby Senior, under Bst.—South Canterbury Town 3 (Sinclair, a penalty goal) beat Christchurch 0; Ashburton 6 (Dudley and Scannell one try each) beat South Canterbury Country 3 (Gould, a try); South Canterbury Town 11 (Sinclair two tries, one conversion. Rushton a try) beat South Canterbury Country 0; Christchurch 8 (Murray and Greig one try each, Campbell a conversion) beat Ashburton 6 (Malloy and Williamson one try each).
