SUCCESSFUL N.Z. SCULPTOR
MELBOURNE UNIVERSITY COMMISSION Mr Alan Ingham, a New Zealand sculptor who settled in Auckland last year on his return from England, where he was assistant to Henry Moore for three years, will leave soon for Australia. With Mr Tom Bass, a sculptor who was his fellow student in Sydney nine years ago, he will work on a huge relief mural in the Wilson Hall at Melbourne University. * Designed by a well-known Australian mural artist, Mr Douglas Annand, the mural will occupy a wall 60 feet long and 46 feet high. The sketch design is on the theme of truth out of chaos. One of Mr Ingham's tasks will be to carve a figure 30 feet high in the material of the wall — big plaster blocks, six inches thick, k- Although this commission represents only a few months’ work. Mr Ingham and his wife expect to remain in Australia. Mr Ingham’s work has stimulated sculpture in New Zealand and he has assisted fellow artists by making available his bronze foundry at Birkdale. But in the last year he has not found sufficient commissions to keep him in the Dominion, although three have been offered since he accepted the Melbourne assignment Mr Ingham is a brother of Mrs Russell Clark, of Christchurch.
