RACING NATIONAL HURDLES TO SOLAR MIST

Notable Weight-Carrying Performance

GLAYVA AND ADVERSARY WIN DOUBLE

Solar Mist left no doubt about his pre-eminence among New Zealand's top-flight hurdlers when he led over the last six furlongs of the Grand National Hurdles with top weight of 11.7 at Riccarton yesterday.

It was the best weight-carrying winning performance in* the race since 1939. when Padishah was successful with 11.7 in his second of two victories. -

Yesterday Solar Mist was having his first race over hurdles since he won his second Great Northern Hurdles with 10.13 at Ellerslie in June. Last year Solar Mist beat all but Cogitation in the Grand National Hurdles, and won his second Sydenham Hurdles at the same meeting.

A start for the seven-year-old Lambourn gelding in the Grand National Steep'echase this year was planned until he ran off when schooling before the Christchurch Hunt Club’s meeting. He was scratched for the Homeby Steeplechase after that fall, and was making his first appearance at the Grand National meeting when he won yesterday.

Solar Mist jumped competently well up in the field over the first round. It was the good standard of jumping that made J. P. Carter allow him to run into a clear lead a little sooner than he would have otherwise wished.

The pace was not strong going to the six furlongs, and when Solar Mist jumped to the front there, Carter knew the top weight was going well enough to go on alone.

Solar Mist’s only challenger in the straight was Briie, a good favoarite for his attempt to improve a marked run of successes by horses owned and trained by Jar L Robinson. Matangi. Brue came within a length or so of completing the Grand Nationals double for Mr Robinson, -’whose colours had been carried to victory by Treasure Ring in the Grand National Steeples. Brue was the favourite. Solar Mist was the 2*3 favourite. Test Flight did best of the South Island horses, finishing third, but six lengths behind Brue. Mar Mist is trained at Awapuni by J. 7. Waller for Mrs J. Howell and Mr R. E. Johnson, and John Carter has been his jockey in his notable victories. This was his ninth win. and it carried his stake winning* to £9825. Off-course supporters of the GlayvaBallast bracket for the Handicap.' the first leg of the double, might not have been so enthusiastic about their prospects had they known earlier that Ballast, the Winter Cup fourth, would not be a runner. But Glayva saved the day for them by winning in sound style after leading most of the way. Glayva was ridden by B. P. Wood, who was Ballast’s jockey in the Winter Cup. Mrs J. G Donald’s Cartertontrained Cassock mare was the 7-6 favourite. paid £l3 8s for a win, and carried 23.828 10s tickets in a double pool of £86.233 Ngatoki was a not favourite for the second lea. the Sel vyn Handicap, but he was soundly beaten by Adversary, which could not gel closer than six lengths from him in the Paparua Handicap last Saturday. Adversary finished brilliantly from the tail of the handy-sized field And won going,£away by two and a half lengths TF i The Glayva—Adversary combination carried 13314 10s tickets, and paid £lO2 8s 6d for £l. Chief Justice, the runner-up to Baylona in the hack steeplechase last . Saturday, recorded a decisive win in the Bteaufort Steeplechase. He fenced confidently in front for a good way. and his decisive win was well deserved after a str* ng of minor placings for Sir Thoruas Duncan The minor place-; getters in a race free of falls were Belgravia and Irish Glance, both members of H. A. Anderton’s Wingatui team. It was a good day’s racing, run under good conditions. The track was hold-

ing The on-course totalisator turnover was £103.820. including £10.539 10s on the double. Last year’s total was £107,825. Brue’s Game Challenge Solar Mist jumped up to the leaders about six furlongs from home in the Grand National Hurdles, went clear in a few strides and held his lead to the finish against a game challenge from the light-weight, Brue. It was a two-horse finish. Test Flight, third, was six lengths back. Mainlander. Brutus, and Clancy lost Several lengths at the start The first hurdle brought down Sonloch. There High Chancellor was leading, Jbut /miens took charge going to t£e halfmile for the first time. Mainlander ?nd Algaro were alongside Amiens entering the last round. The nace had been slow, and Brutus was then following the leaders. He was a length clear of High Chancellor. Solar Mist was two lengths back with Noon. The McDonough. Chief Light Brue. Viewfield. and Irish Saint bunched close by. Solar Mist had only Mainlander. Algaro, Amiens, and Brutus ahead of him at the nine furlongs, where Test Flight was moving forward a few places back to be alongside Chief Light just in front of Brue. Amiens outjumped Algaro to get to the front at the next flight, but he did rot hold his lead long. Solar Mist was going so strongly and jumping so well that Carter took him to the front at the six fuilonss. Brue kept imyrcvin> his position across the top, and moved into second place alongs de Test Flight coming to the home •turn, where Clancy was doing best of the others. Brus’s challenge was a game one, but Solar Mist held him decisively by a length. Test Flight was nine lengths clear of Clancy. Amiens was 15 Imgths back, fifth, and three lengths clear of Brutus. Next in a gap. was The McDonough, leading Viewfield. High Chancellor, Irish Saint Chief Light Noon, Algaro, Mainlander. and Reformed. Glayva Wins Handsomely Glayva joined Curzon in front soon alter the start of the Heathcote Handicap. the first leg of the double, ran clear outside the furlong, and won bv a length and a half from Tesla, which finished brilliantly wide otit The consistent Riccartontrained. Demand shaded Red Star for third. The JWake, Good Abbot Russleigh. and Josudi were slow beginners in the big field. When the rush for positions in the leading bunch was over. Glayva was sharing the lead with Curzon, ahead of Golden Morn, Red Star, Fulgent, Fettle, Macduff, Demand, Suphero, Desperado- Meresun, Relinquish, and Good Abbot Going to the half-mile, Macduff and Fulgent were 4n the trailing positions behind Glayva and Curzon. Curzon was done on the home turn, ■where Macduff was alongside Glayva ahead of Demand. Fulgent. Desperado, Red Star. Meresun, and The Wake. Tesla did not become prominent until rear the furlong, and by that time Glayva held an unassailable lead. Demand was a length and a half behind Tesla. Red Star, a good fourth, vas followed in by the fast-finishing Lord Milling. Meresun and Josudi were next on terms ahead of Bosky,

Good Abbot Field Chief, The Wake, Desperado. Suphero, Russleigh, Macduff, Fettle, Relinquish, Vitalogy. Golden Mom, Curzon, Rio Negro, Fulgent, Royal Voyage, Baffling Eyes, and Passchenedaele. Not Tested Jumping neatly and keeping up a strong gallop. Chief Justice was not tested to win the Beauford Steeplechase. The Wingatui-trained stablemates, Belgravia and Irish Glance, filled the minor places, Belgravia running past Irish Glance in the straight. Chief Justice ran clear at the brush at the top of the straight and led into the last round by five lengths from Irish Glance. Ronay and Belgravia were on terms two lengths back, with Beauform close by. Next, at intervals, were Mystify, Prince Coronach, Pantata, Master Rich, Ironside, and Ivanhoe. Belgravia was clear in third place after jumping Cutts’s. There, Chief Justice was holding tb his five lengths’ lead from Irish Glance, which could not reduce it in the run to the brush at the top of the straight. By this time, Ironside was moving into fourth place, having kept up a strong run from the mile, but he could make no further progress coming to the straight. Belgravia closed on Irish Glance coming to the last fence, where Chief Justice led by three lengths. Belgravia dropped Irish Glance, but did not really trouble Chief Justice, whose winning margin was four lengths. Five lengths separated Belgravia and Irish Glance. Then there was half a length to Ironside, and 10 lengths to Ivanhoe. Pantata was close by, sixth, clear of Mystify, Ronay, Beauform, Prince Coronach and Master Rich. Adversary's Strong Ruh

Adversary’s tfas the last and strongest run in the SelWyn Handicap and it gave him a decisive win from the hot favourite, Ngatoki, which had been hard-ridden into a short lead inside the furlong. Adversary was the last of 10 at the end or a furlong, where Kasr El Nil had taken charge from Lucrative and Walkova, Brooke, Ngatoki, Accountant, Mighty Dollar, and Himiler. Brooke and Mighty Dollar moved forward to follow Kasr El Nil into the straight, but;both were done with well outside the furlong. Walkova and Himiler kept up stronger runs to range up to Kasr El Nil going to the furlong. Ngatoki then worked through from the ruck and was hard ridden into a short lead, but Adversary cut him down with ease. Ngatoki beat Walkova by a length and a half for second. Kasr El Nil was the same margin back, fourth, three-quarters of a length ahead of Himiler. Cheerio, the slowest beginner, was three lengths back, sixth, just beating the weakening Mighty Dollar. Lucrative faded to eighth after having the run of the race. She beat only Accountant and Brooke. • *- HUNT CUP, Of £6OO. About two miles and a half. 5. 4—H. F. HORSES lose ground at START OF HURDLES

The starter, Mr F. D. Mac Nab, was questioned at Riccarton yesterday oru. Why Clancy and Brutus lost ground at the start of the Grand National Hurdles Mr Mac Nab told the stipendiary stewards that Brutus swung round and took Clancy with him just as he was about to release the barrier. Brue, ridden by . V. H. Simpson, lost ground about five furlongs from home in the race. x'Brue had made a good jump at the hurdle near this point, landing up on the inside of Brutus, with the result that he had insufficient room and had had to be checked. The incident was purely accidental. Sir Gerald, winner of the Sumner Handicap, was swabbed as a routine measure.
