LIQUOR SALES TO MAORIS

RENEWED CONTROL ADVOCATED (New Zealand Press Association) ROTORUA, August 9. The sooner the law prohibiting the selling of liquor to Maoris for Consumption off the premises was brought back, the better it would be for all concerned, said Mr W. H. Freeman, S.M., in the Rotorua Magistrate’s Court today. "TTxat is only my opinion," he added. "It is a matter for Parliament.” The Magistrate had before him a mill-hand, of Te Whaiti, who was charged with assaulting a liquor subagent and his wife, and with causing -wilful damage. The case clearly showed the attitude of Maoris towards beer, said the Magistrate. It appeared to be the height of their ambition to drink large quantities of it. They were unable to take it, and became highly excited and noisy.
