RACING FORM AT WASHDYKE MAY BE GUIDE FOR NATIONAL

Two steeplechases, one for amateur riders, a hurdle race, and two flat races for the open handicap horses form the nucleus of a very attractive programme for the South Canterbury Hunt Club’s annual meeting at Washdyke today. A big number of horses engaged will have engagements at the Grand National and Christchurch Hunt Club’s meetings at Riccarton, and today’s form should have some value as a guide.

Sentinel, Fort Silver and Strato were winners at the South Canterbury Hunt Club’s meeting last year, and had further successes at the Christchurch Hunt Club’s meeting. Young Prince, which was third to Fort Silver in last year’s Trerhemaker Steeplechase, went on to win the Homeby and Grand National Steeplechases, and the Claremont Handicap winner. Sawdust, met with another success in the August Handicap on the third day of the Grand National meeting.

Young Prince and Ironside, another South Island hope for this year’s Grand National, have engagements in flat races today. Ironside has a fair turn of speed for a jumper, and his performance in the Pentlow Hack Handicap should show how he is faring in h*s preparation for the Grand National This will be Ironside’s first race since he easily won the Otago Steeplechase last month. Today’s double will be on the Claremont Handicaps Numbers 1 and 2. Golden Moru is a smart light-weight in the first leg, quite capable of matching the best of the others. He may end the winning run of the Oraritrained Cloudy View, whose three successes from her last three starts have carried her well up in the handicap 5. h ? J ls^ onl y 71b below the top weight. Gold Scheme.

The Invercargill-trained Brooke was scratched for-the first leg on Thursday. and Macduff may drop out of the field now that a firm track is unlikely. Declare Favoured

Declare may bring second leg honours to Riccarton. In a field weakened by the withdrawal of Suphero. Declare is the outstanding form prospect With several runners having different form backgrounds, the search for the Teschemaker Steeplechase winner will not be easy. Four of the 13 acceptors are from the Wingatui stable ? - Anderton, and none of them, Irish Glance, Belgravia, The*- Tongs and Spanish Chief, would be without prospects. All but Belgravia have been winners this season Poilu is a doubtful started in the Hadlow Hurdles, a race Exchequer will be attempting to win for the second time. Exchequer won comfortably under 9-11 last year. He has run few bad races for Mrs E. W. Rosewame this winter, and top weight of 10-12 may not keep him out of the struggle for the honours. White Satin, another member of H. A. Anderton’s team, beat the hurdlers easily at Waimate last week, and another success may be within reach. After ram on Thursday night and showers yesterday the track will be easy, but should give good winter going. Selections:— 11.30 a.m.—Pareora Steeo I echase: Royal Simper Paraman ui.
