Italy’s New Prime Minister Is Noted Lawyer

Italy’s new Prime Minister, Mr Antonio Segni, who will present his Cabinet to Parliament next Wednesday, is a 64-year-old Sardinian lawyer and a specialist in agrarian and commercial law. He became one of Italy’s best known Education Ministers, from 1951 to 1953, for vigorously attacking educational problems. His non-sectarian views earned the praise of those who are not Roman Catholics. As Minister of Agriculture in 1950 he started the land reform programme which has already turned 92,000 poverty stricken families of landless farm labourers into small holders on land taken—against compensation—from big estates.
He was one of his own vi holdings were lopped off under A member of the Italian People’s Party, the pre-Fascist forerunner of the Christian Democrats, he was active in the anti-Fascist movement during the last two years of the war. The executives of the Coalition parties have agreed that the new Government shall maintain Italy’s proWestern foreign policy, while at the same time supporting all feasible moves towards relaxing East-West tension. , They also agreed to try to stimulate Italy’s trade with “Iron Curtain” countries. The Liberal Party, representatives of big industry, and the landowners, obtained from the Christian Democrat excutive stringent guarantees against Mr Segni’s known zeal for land reform and for other socially progressive policies. Treasury: Mr Silvio Gava (Christian Democrat) —no change. Finance: Mr Giulio Andreotti (Christian Democrat). Defence: Mr Paolo Emilio Taviani (Christian Democrat) —no change. Justice: Mr Aldo Moro (Christian Democrat). Education: Mr Paolo Rossi (Social Democrat). Public Works: Mr Guiseppe Romita (Social Democrat)—no change. Industry and Commerce: Mr Guido Cortese (Liberal). Foreign Trade? Mr Bernardo Mattarella (Christian Democrat) Agriculture: Mr Emilio Colombo (Christian Democrat). Labour and Social Security: Mr Ezio Vigorelli (Social Democrat)—no change. Posts and Telecommunications: Mr Giovanni Braschi (Christian Democrat). Transport: Mr Armando Angelini (Christian Democrat). Merchant Marine: Mr Gennaro Cassiani (Christian Democrat).
