STRANGE MURDER SENTENCE
Solitary Confinement On Anniversary
CHICAGO, July 6. Shortly after dinner last night two women went into solitary confinement for 24 hours to observe the twentieth anniversary of a murder for which they are serving 180-year sentences. The two women, Evelyn Smith, now 66, and Blanche Dunkel, aged 64, were convicted in 1935 of the murder of Mrs Dunkel’s son-in-law. In sentencing them, Judge Cornelius Harrington, specified that the women should spend each anniversary of the crime in solitary confinement. This provision of the sentence was carried out annually—until last year. Then, the Attorney-General’s office ruled that the order need not be fol-! lowed. However, last month the Attorney-General’s office reversed the decision and notified the prison officials to resume the solitary confinement once•' a year.
