Dr. and Mrs Stewart Hunter, Worcester street, will leave today for Auckland, where Dr. Hunter will attend the geriatric conference next week. Mrs Dora Smeaton, of Royal terrace. Christchurch. i Miss Kitty Paviour-Smith, assistant > lecturer in zoology at the University of , Otago, will leave Dunedin for Britain on July 21, to study at the Bureau of Animal Population. Miss Paviour-Smith was recently awarded a fellowship by the New Zealand Federation of University Women, and she will do research on small insects which inhabit a fungus growing on rotting logs in Wytham Woods. A demonstration on the making of hats was given by Mrs Bruce Winchester at the July meeting of the Federation of Congregational Women. Members contributed articles for Christmas parcels for the London Missionary Society’s missionaries. Mrs Hetherington presided. The hostesses were Mesdames Blackwood, Holstein, Mardon, and Miss Willis.

The July meeting of the PapanuiMerivale Plunket Mothers’ Club was held recently, when Mrs H. E. Keys presided. Mrs J. Hughes gave a talk on care of the skin. The competition for the best sugar-bag article was won by Mrs N. Browne, with Mrs J. Jones second. Another competition was won by Mrs J. A. Biggs. The hostess for the evening was Mrs B. Grim wood. Mrs M. E. Orchard presided at the monthly meeting of the Canterbury provincial executive of the Women’s Division of Federated Farmers and introduced Miss C. Robinson, the guest speaker. Mrs L. Hope, of Dunsandel, was congratulated on being placed third in the speech contest held in Wellington during the Dominion conference. Mrs A. Harper, of Lees Valley, was also congratulated on being elected a vice-president of the Dominion council. A report on a school for members held at Te Kiteroa rest home was given by Mrs C. K. Perry. Mrs Orchard reported that an amendment passed at the Dominion conference was that any woman interested in the aims and objects of the division was entitled to membership. The July meeting of the Papanui Garden Club was held at the home of Mrs W. VZ. Diamond. A pruning demonstration of rose bushes was given by Mrs H. W. Gourlay. The competition for the day was the best pot plant and resulted as follows:—Non-flower-ing: A class, Mrs H. W. Gourlay 1. Mrs M. McConnell 2; B class, Mrs H. S. Atkinson 1. Flowering variety: A class, Mrs T. E. West 1: B class. Mrs H. S. Atkinson 1. Best bloom, Mrs E. H. Watkins.

The monthly meeting of the Wairarapa Garden Club was held yesterday at the home of Mrs H. E. W. Roberton, Papanui road. Mrs Alan Nicholls presided and welcomed the guest speaker, Mr J. H. Glazebrook, who spoke on the pruning of berried fruits. Competitions resulted as follows: sprays, class A, Mrs J. Russell 1, Mrs Alan Nicholls 2: class B, Mrs L. R. Burt 1. Mrs J. S. Middleton 2; Mrs L. W. Matson and Mrs A. J. Danks (equal) 3; best bloom, class A, Mrs Nicholls 1, Mrs Roberton 2, Mrs H. T. Jennings 3; class B. Mrs H. R. Black 1. Mrs Matson 2. Mrs Danks 3: two parsnips, class A, Mrs E. J. Cordner 1. Mrs Roberton 2: class B, Mrs Black 1. Mrs Matson 2; Mrs Le Clerc Latter 3. Mrs Pheloung presided at the June meeting of the Aranui Townswomen’s Guild. Mrs Whittaker was presented with a birthday spray. Leaders of the civic, handcraft, drama, singing, and gardening circles gave comprehensive reports on circle activities. A bring and buy sale was held in aid of headquarters’ building fund. Mrs Tucker gave a demonstration of cake decorating. A competition was won by Mrs Dalton.

Mrs H. Sturge presided at the monthly meeting of the Spreydon subcentre of the Red Cross Society, and gave a demonstration on the making of novelties from shells. It was reported that the sub-centre had forwarded £9 10s to the centre, being its first contribution towards the building fund.

More than 80 delegates from hospitals throughout the Dominion met at the Rotorua Hospital for the twelfth annual conference of the Student Nurses’ Association. Representatives of the Registered Nurses’ Association and observers from the Australian Student Nursing Movement were also present. The conference was officially opened by Mr A M. Linton, Mayor of Rotorua.
