DRAINAGE

Sir, —It was reported in the newspapers recently that the Auckland hospital authorities had been putting a lot of rubbish in the sewer and so blocking up sewers leading to other places. Probably others, apart from the hospital authorities were doing that. The same things happen here. Flats and factories put into sewers rubbish which may travel a long way before blocking the street sewer. The rising sewage blocks the sewers leading to residents’ homes. It is common when sewers get blocked on the streets. This is the fault of the Drainage Board, which does not keep the sewers pumped out. In Auckland the drainage authorities recognise the trouble. In Christchurch the Drainage Board will not give a working man ratepayer a hearing when he wants to discuss the matter with the board.—Yours, etc., OLD RATEPAYER.. June 21, 1955. [“lf your correspondent will inform the board of specific instances of persons putting into the sewer matter which causes a blockage the board will prosecute the offenders,’’ said the chairman of the Christchurch Drainage Board (Mr H. P. Smith). “If ‘Old Ratepayer’ has a matter which he wishes to discuss with the board he should write to the secretary, and if the board feels that it warrants his attending on it he will certainly be given an opportunity to do so,’’ he said.]
