OLYMPIC GAMES JUDGE

SYDNEY WOMAN’S APPOINTMENT

Mrs Doris Magee, founder and honorary secretary for 23 years of the New South Wales Women’s Amateur Athletic Association, has been chosen to be finish judge of the Olympic track events for women. Women have judged field games at previous Olympics, but so far as is known, not track events. Mrs Magee will spend part of eight days of next year's Olympic Games standing at the finish of the 100 metres, the 200 metres, the 80 metres hurdles, and the 400-metre relay picking the winners. Mrs Magee, still very slim and straight, can look back on more than 20 years’ hard work for women’s sport. Since 1932, when she founded the New South Wales Women’s Ai ateur Athletic Association, she has spent almost every Saturday at the Sydney Sports Ground. She has booked £l5OO worth of tickets for her association’s members at the Olympic Games. Mrs Magee went to London in 1948 as chaperon to the Australian athletic team, and in 1952 she was Marjorie Jackson’s manageress in Japan. She has been an Australian selector for international competitions since 1938, and is a member of the women's commission of the International Amateur Athletic Federation. In addition to the appointment of Mrs Magee, the Australian Women's Amateur Athletic Union, of which Mrs Magee is secretary, has appointed two women field games judges, Mrs A. Robinson and Miss Lillian Neville, both of Victoria. UNIVERSITY WOMEN CANTERBURY BRANCH OF FEDERATION Mrs W. Grant presided at the June meeting of the Canterbury branch of the New Zealand Federation of University Women. It was reported from the Dominior executive in Auckland that the triennial conference would be held there from January 21 to January 26. 1951 As the Dominion executive would thei come to Canterbury, Mrs Grant saio that nominations for Dominion office would soon be required. A letter of acknowledgement was received from Dr. Natalia Zmdronikowa. of Bayern, South Germany, for a parcel of clothing sent her by the branch. Mrs Grant read a letter which she had received from Miss G. Tolentino, the chairman of the Mindoro chapter of the federation in the Philippines The Mindoro chapter had entertained Mrs W. H. Scott during her stay, and Mrs Grant had written to thank the Philippine university women for their hospitality. Miss Tolentino hoped to receive more letters from New Zealand university women. Mrs Scott spoke of her visit to the Philippines, Siam, and Hong Kong early in the year, when she attended the Pan-Pacific Women’s Association Conference in Manila. Her talk was illustrated by coloured slides shown by Miss Barbara Hale. Mrs C. E. Foweraker expressed thanks on behalf of the members. Members of the Christchurch Wes* High School Old Girls’ Association were entertained recently at the home of Mrs Rhona Wilton. Clyde road Mrs June Ferron, a former pupil gave an interesting talk illustrated by coloured slides of her visit to Great Britain. A competition arranged by Mrs Wilton was won by. Mrs Doreen Cox.
