PAPANUI HIGH SCHOOL
VARIED PROGRAMME AT CONCERT The annual concert by pupils of the Papanui High School last evening was a first-class demonstration of the school s cultural activities outside the classroom. The programme of music, dancing, drama, and physical culture was well performed, and enjoyed by the audience that filled the Repertory Theatre. The school’s orchestra, .which includes some past pupils and members of the staff, and the large choir of boys and girls, were led by Mr T. J. Kirk-Burnnand through a programme of music that was both popular and effective, yet well suited to their abiilties. While the combined items were well done, the choir and orchestra performed best separately. Their last item together, however, the “Skye Boat Song,” was most enjoyable. Among the orchestra’s best items were the gavotte from Bach’s orchestral suite No. 3 in D. “Allegretto.” •by James Hook, and Handel’s Fantasia in C. The pianist in this item was Miss Fima Forster. The girls’ choir sang Hush S. Robertson’s “All in the April Ev’ning” in two parts. The display of gymnastics by a team of bovs. and rhythmical exercises by a girls’ team showed much skill and well-directed energv. This part of the programme, with folk dancing by a junior class, was much enojyed. The second part of the concert was n one-act plav. “Something to Talk About.” bv Eden Philpott. Moustaches wore worn, manv cigarettes were smoked, and much “whisky” drunk. The cast of seven anneared to enjoy it as much as the audience.
