THREE-LANE HIGHWAYS
i Approval Given By Roads Board REVERSAL OF POLICY (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND. June 29. The National Roads Board has overruled the objection cf the Commissioner of Works (Mr F. M. H- Hanson) to three-lane highways. “The board is happy to continue with three-lane highways,” Mr W. S. Goosman, the board's chairman and Minister of Works, said in Auckland today. This means that Auckland’s controversial three-lane highway between Manurewa and Papatoetoe has been reprieved. It may be extended further. Last August, Mr Hanson told the board that three-lane highways would not be introduced in New Zealand while he was chairman of the board. A few months ago. Mr Hanson resigned the’chairmanship on taking up the appointment of Commissioner of Works. Mr Goosman said today that some 2.000.000 vehicles had used the threelane highway between Manurewa and Papatoetoe since it was marked out 15 months ago. There had not b»en an accident. Its value had been demonstrated. Where there was a danger of a pileup at comers on a three-lane highway, the corners could be widened, Mr Goosman said.
