CURRENT NOTES

Mrs H. A. Young (Cashmere), who has been visiting relatives in Melbourne, will return to Christchurch by air today. Mr and Mrs F. C. Penfold (Fendalton) returned to Christchurch this week after a short visit to Great Britain. On their return journey by air they travelled across America. Misses Lucy and Blanche Sanders (Worcester street west) will leave on Tuesday to spend several weeks in Tauranga and Auckland.

Miss Joyce Barrell, a well known pianist in Christchurch, and Miss Lorna Anderson, of Murray Downs, Waiau, will leave early next week by the Mataroa for a year’s visit to England. Yesterday afternoon Mrs J. W. Palk entertained them at • a very pleasant party at her home, where many guests, mostly interested in music, met and wished them well and to enjoy an excellent programme. Songs were sung by Mrs Cara Cogswell, Mrs R. H. Sherris and Miss Anderson and piano solos were played by Miss Barrell. Mrs Sherris, on behalf of Mrs Palk and all the guests, wished Miss Barrell and Miss Anderson a very happy holiday. Miss Adrienne Nutt was the guest speaker at a luncheon meeting of the Young Contingent of the Victoria League at Beaths yesterday. Miss Nutt spoke of her experiences when working in Geneva with the International Labour Organisation, and in Rome when on the staff of the Food and Agriculture Organisation. Mr Hamish Hay presided and Mr Crowley Weston thanked the speaker. Members of the council of the Christchurch Free Kindergarten Association were the guests of the president ot the association (Mrs F. E. Burrell) and the executive at an evening social recently. A special guest. Professor Marguerite Burnham, was welcomed by Mrs Burrell. Professor Burnham later gave a talk which included trends jf modern pre-school education in the United States. Miss Heathei Murie, a stuuent at the Kindergarten Training College, sang three soprano solos, accompanied by Mr A. Packman. Mrs A. F. Johnson thanked Mrs Burnham for her talk, and emphasised its value to all interested in kindergarten work.

The result of a Patton match held ir Crockford’s Club recently was as follows:—Dr. C. Newman and Mr O. Newman, Dr. P. Brass and Mr T. Kun I; Mrs R. R. Bell and Mrs E. L. Wyles. Mrs J. Seldon and Miss J. Rogers 2; Mr and Mrs R. Wiseman, Miss A. Hunt and Mr K. Stammers 3. The final result of the three-night Howell match was as follows:—Mrs R. Renton Bell 1, Mrs J. Seldon 2, Mrs P. A. Ardagh 3. Mrs Bennett presided at the second birthday party of the St. Martins Townswomen’s Guild and welcomed members, friends and representatives of sister guilds. The choir gave three items. Misses Ellis and Wright sang solos. Two plays by drama members were much enjoyed.

Ness: representative on Canterbury Council of Social Service, Mr Allen; representative on Christchurch special class leavers after care committee, Miss Munday. The meeting was addressed by Mr W. J. Eggelton, area organiser for special classes in the Canterbury Education Board district. The Rev. W. M. Hendrie was the guest speaker at the monthly evening meeting of the Christchurch Business and Professional Women’s Club. He gave an interesting talk on the people of Scotland. Miss Nelle Hall presided, and Mrs M. A. Irwin thanked the speaker. A talk on interior decorating was given by Dorothy Lindsay at a recent meeting of the civic circle of the Central Townswomen’s Guild. Mrs Lindley presided and welcomed about 70 member’s.
