OTTAWA-LONDON FLIGHT
RECORD CLAIMED FOR CANBERRA (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, June 28The Royal Air Force’s famous Canberra jet bomber, Aries IV, set a new Ottawa to London record today after fog and a fuel shortage had threatened a possible catastrophe. The Royal Aero Club is claiming the : time of 6hr 52min 12sec at an average of 496.8 miles an hour for the 3300-mile flight. Aries, which five days ago raced the sun across the North Pole to Alaska, landed at the Royal Air Force’s nightfighter base at West Mailing, Kent, with fuel for only five minutes’ flying. Heavy fog began to clamp down on West Mailing as the gauges neared the zero mark, but it lifted just in time.
